Car preparation for a road trip

Car Care Tips for Your Next Road Trip

Snacks in the car. Check. Clothes packed. Check. Vehicle maintenance. Check? Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle is up for the trip.

When you're on vacation or visiting the relatives for a holiday, you want everything to go without a hitch. Imagine getting a flat tire or having the check engine light turn on when you're away from home. It's not how anyone wants to spend their regular time, let alone their recreational time.

While you can't always prevent car trouble, there are things you can do to reduce the risk that problems will arise on your next road trip. Keep these tips in mind, and feel confident behind the wheel wherever you go.

  • Check the Wiper Blades: It's recommended you replace your windshield wiper blades every 6 months to a year. If you see streaks or notice decreased visibility compared to when your wiper blades were newer, replace them before you go for an easier and safer driving experience.
  • Fill the Windshield Washer Fluid: Make sure you have windshield washer fluid in your vehicle.
  • Check Your Last Maintenance Date: Are you due for an oil change soon? Is it almost time to inspect your vehicle? Take care of any upcoming maintenance before you hit the road.
  • Check Your Tires: Make sure your tires are at the correct air pressure levels and aren't near or at the end of their tread life. Worn tires and underinflated tires are more prone to punctures. Overinflated tires can also cause problems with performance and handling, so you'll want to make sure your tires are in the range they should be for proper performance.
  • Check Your Lights: Make sure all your lights work.
  • Make Sure Your Phone is Charged: In the event something does happen, you'll want a way to contact roadside assistance and other parties who are expecting you. Make sure your phone is charged and keep spare car chargers on hand in case you need to use them.
  • Fill Your Gas Tank: You never know how far away the next gas station might be, especially if you're around unfamiliar roads that may be closed off for construction, weather emergencies, and accidents. Try to refuel whenever you're at half a tank to ensure you'll be in a good position in the event you need to go longer before you can refuel.
  • Bring a Tool Kit: There are a few tools you should add to your trunk in the case of an emergency. Items might include a flashlight, roadside warning lights, screwdrivers, wrenches, hammer, jump start kit, tire jack, and spare tire if your vehicle can fit one.

These are some of the ways you can prepare for a road trip ahead of time and create a less stressful situation in the event you experience a problem while away from home.

Do you have an upcoming road trip? Would you like an extra eye on your vehicle's condition? Contact Scott's Service Place and ask for a vehicle road trip check. We serve Wheaton, IL, Winfield, IL, Carol Stream, IL, and surrounding areas.
